Urban Vision has designed key walking and cycling routes across Salford which has resulted in a joint submission with Salford City Council to the National Transport Awards 2017. The submission, titled ‘Salford’s Traffic Free Routes’, has been shortlisted in the ‘Excellence in Cycling & Walking’ category.
The projects were designed to create an extensive network connecting people to jobs, school and leisure across Salford and by the end of 2018 will contribute to over 28 kilometres of high quality pathways that are accessible and easy for everybody to use.
A number of Urban Vision teams including Landscape Design, Highway Design, Structural Engineers, Principal Designers (CDM)and Quantity Surveyors have been involved across the projects and have designed and project managed the schemes from start to finish.
The current phase of works, the first of which was completed in June 2015, has continued for the last two years and the final route is due to be completed in March 2019 to complete the network.
The routes worked on include the Port Salford Greenway, Roe Green Loopline, Tyldesley Loopline and Ellenbrook Loopline.
The Port Salford Greenway saw the introduction of a new 3m wide walkway with footbridges, lighting to underpasses, benches and wayfinding. The route links a number of communities, greenspaces and areas of employment throughout Salford.
The Looplines also bring similar benefits, including high quality signage, frequent access points to connect residential and employment areas and schools and three-metre wide shared use paths for walking and cycling that are high quality, durable and low maintenance.
Andy Stockton, Associate Director at Urban Vision, said: “Our team was delighted to design these works. Creating this continuous cycling and walking link not only provides new opportunities for the community to cycle and walk to work but it also increases the opportunity for leisure time and to enjoy Salford’s nature.”
Salford City Council will find out if the ‘Traffic-free routes’ has won at the National Transport Awards in October this year.
