Delivering property solutions for schools
Following the need to increase school capacity and upgrade school buildings in Salford, Urban Vision were commissioned to project manage the design and build of new £5.7m school building to accommodate growing pupil numbers and the future learning needs at St Lukes C of E Primary School in Salford.
What we did
Our property team worked closely with Salford City Council’s Children’s Services team as well as Laing o’Rourke and Atkins to deliver successful building design solution that would meet the needs of increasing pupil numbers in the area.
We delivered the school over the short time scale of just 10 month to ensure the children could benefit for their new learning environment as soon as possible.
Our property team provided multidisciplinary professional services including project management, mechanical and electrical engineering, principal design as well as cost management advice. The initial concept designs were developed up to tender stage to engage the client in discussions from an early stage.
This has enabled Urban Vision to work with Laing O’Rourke, the Council’s contractor partner, and Atkins, the scheme architect, to deliver an agreed solution within budget and timescales.
Adding value and bring efficiency
- Our team opted for a modular build which meant the building could be physically made off site so works on the school grounds were minimised considerably. Through the use of BIM and factory based manufacture, this project was also completed earlier than a traditional build resulting in approximately a 40% reduction of time spent on site
- Our team also opted for a ‘natural’ approach to the design that incorporated natural ventilation and natural lighting to enhance the learning experience. This approach was less energy intensive, user friendly and offers a low maintenance solution which has resulted in the school building receiving a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating.
- The innovative design offers bespoke, flexible teaching spaces during the day and usable community space for out of school hours
- The building provides good thermal construction and air tightness reducing heat loss which reduces the running costs for the school.
The project was delivered to a high standard, on time and within budget. Our early engagement with the contractor ensured meaningful dialogue and concerted efforts to solve challenges whilst taking into account views and opinions of wider stakeholders allowing for the successful delivery of the project.
“I just wanted to say how thrilled we are with our new building. Our children and their families, staff and governors are all so impressed – the expression ‘WOW!’ has been heard many times this last week. Showing people round the building has been a pleasure!Throughout the design and build process all personnel were extremely courteous and professional making the whole process a lot easier than we had imagined it would be.Our children now have a building to be proud of and which says to them ‘You are worth it’.Please pass on our thanks to your team”.
